Experience Mgahinga national park in south western Uganda where you will be able to trek both mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in the true wilderness and also encounter the Batwa culture.
You will be involved in long road trips to and from this national park because it is located in the remote south western region of the country. Other attractions that can be encountered are the elephants, olive baboons, red tailed monkeys, Vervet monkeys, among others.
You will have several stopovers, with the major ones being lunch enroute and also at the Uganda equator for experiment and photography.
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Depart to Mgahinga gorilla national park in south western Uganda
Depart to where silver meets gold (Mgahinga gorilla national park) after a pick up from the airport or hotel in Kampala. This is the smallest national park in the country with an area of 33.7 sq.km and the journey can take 7-8 hours depending on traffic on the road.
It’s famous for golden monkeys and mountain gorillas that are found in this park and the only area you can trek the golden monkeys in Uganda.
You will have first stopover at the Uganda equator in Kayabwe where you will purchase some souvenirs (on your cost), take photos among others. Proceed to Mbarara town where you will have lunch at Igongo cultural centre and this will enable you to explore the Banyankole culture.
Later on, proceed through the long horned cantle farm lands, Kigezi terraced hills up to Kisoro district and find the way to Mgahinga national park where you will check in your accommodation facility.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking and cultural encounter
Wake up and drive to the park headquarters after a cup of tea or coffee to receive short instructions about trekking rules such as using long sleeved clothes, hiking shoes, no flash light cameras, among others.
You will head to the forest to start trekking and you will encounter other attractions like elephants, olive baboons, red tailed monkeys, Vervet monkeys and also different bird species that are beautiful in their natural colours.
Trekking can take 2-7 hours depending on where you find these endangered species and only one hour will be granted to you after finding them. Return to the headquarters where you will be awarded with a certificate for trekking the gorillas in Uganda.
In the afternoon, visit the Batwa cultural community to experience their culture through traditional dances, music and food. Return to the lodge, marking the end of day two.
Day 3: Golden monkey trekking
Trek the golden monkeys after briefing to receive instructions about trekking rules and regulations while trekking. During the trek, you will encounter elephants, olive baboons, red tailed monkeys, Vervet monkeys among others.
This activity can take 2-5 hours depending on the location of these monkeys but an hour will be allocated to you to enjoy their presence as they swing from one tree to another. After trekking, head to the lodge to be served with lunch and leisure.
Day 4: Travel back to Kampala/Entebbe
The last day of your tour starts with spiced breakfast, after check out of the hotel and set off to Kampala – the capital city of Uganda. A tour will end with either a drop off at the hotel or Entebbe airport.
