1 Day Ziwa Rhino Trekking Safari

One-day Ziwa Rhino adventure safari takes you to the only place in Uganda where you will trek the rhinos in the wilderness that were recently re-introduced in the country. The day starts and ends in Kampala at the pickup point but the tour will be rewarding with more wildlife other than rhinos; these include the crocodiles, hippos, bush bucks, Uganda kobs, duikers, oribis among other, birds like booted eagle, broad billed roller, Abyssinian ground hornbill, blue spotted dove, the rare shoebill stork can also be spotted.

Detailed itinerary

Start the day with an early breakfast at the lodge and hit Kampala-Gulu Highway that will take 3hours passing through the Luwero district that is well known for its historical liberation wars. On reaching this town, you will buy fresh fruits like yellow, jack fruits, pineapples, passion fruits that are locally grown and natives earn a living from this roadside trade.

After a break of about 15 minutes, you will proceed through the plains of Nakasongola – the land known for cattle keepers and rocky hills.

Arrive at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – the only area in Uganda where one can trek and interact freely with the rhinos in the wild; head for the briefing to understand more about the history of rhinos, the sanctuary and conservation efforts by an official from Uganda Rhino Fund.

Other attractions in this sanctuary are the crocodiles, hippos, bush bucks, Uganda kobs, duikers, Oribis, and birds like booted eagle, broad billed roller, Abyssinian ground hornbill, blue spotted dove and the shoe bill stork. Trekking is done on foot which can take 2 – 3 hours. head to Kabalega dinner or Amuka lodge which is located inside the sanctuary where you will be served with hot lunch. Later transfer back to Kampala and a drop off at the hotel.
